1. Book in for an assessment and report by calling 0493 179 851 or emailing alara@thefamilychronicles.com.au
2. You will be contacted by email to book a time and date for your interviews and/or observations. In this email you will be asked some specific questions to ensure all your needs and safety requirements will be met on the day and to address any concerns you may have about the process.
3. Pay invoice two weeks prior to the interview date.
4. Once the invoice is paid you will receive an email with the agenda for the interview day outlining what time you will need to be in attendance. This agenda will also stipulate the times that the children are expected to be present, and when they will be able to leave. It will address any safety concerns or other worries that may have been previously communicated.
5. Interview and observations day! Our facilities have toilets, change tables, a small kitchen, and toys. Just bring you, your children, and their lunches/snacks. Don't forget to have a support person available to watch your children while your interview occurs.
6. The report will be completed and provided to your legal teams within four weeks of the interview and observations day.
Your safety is important. If we are aware of safety concerns (and you will be asked early in the process) we will ensure these are appropriately managed. We have two entry points to our building as well as separate parking options and can completely minimise contact between the two parties.
Your children will need to attend the interviews and observations for part of the day. Due to this, they may miss some of school that day, especially if you live further away. We try to have the children at the interviews and observations for as least time as possible, and will attempt to work around naps as needed too.
It isn't appropriate for children to be present during your interviews. So if they are in your care that day, you will need to organise childcare for them or have them dropped off in time for their part of the interviews and observations. If you require childcare to be offered, one of our staff members with Working With Children Checks and Police Checks completed can be available with prior booking and at an additional cost. Contact for further information.
Children are interviewed on their own and in person. The children's interviews may take up to an hour depending on their age, development and what they want to say. It is important to us that they ALWAYS feel comfortable, safe and supported. They will never be forced to engage if they do not want to, or to answer any questions they do not feel comfortable with. As experts in engaging children, if we think it is clinically safe, we will encourage their participation. Alternatively, if we think the process is causing unnecessary distress or trauma, we will stop the interview and ensure they have support from their caregiver and clinically assess whether the interview should proceed.
The length of time for an adult interview is approximately two hours. Adult interviews can occur in person or over zoom if necessary.
We pride ourselves on our skills in ensuring that the adults involved in the process have the opportunity to be heard and are respected. We can appreciate that the circumstances surrounding each matter are unique and will do our best to accommodate the adults, ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
The purpose of the observations between the parent/caregiver and the child is for the Report Writer to obtain an understanding of what the relationship is like between the two, and how they respond to each other. This is considered in the report in the context of all the collected data. There is nothing to prepare for this element of the interviews. The Report Writer will only be observing and will not interact with the children or parent/caregiver during this process.
We have lots of toys available for the children to play with and some basic snack food. We have a kitchen you can use to heat any food or bottles, fill water bottles, or to keep food cold. We also have a change table for your little one/s.
To keep the children entertained while your interviews are occurring, we are located in a short walking distance to McDonalds, some other food cafes, and not too far away is the lake front and a small park. Coles and Woolworths are also close. Redhead Beach (and park) and Blacksmiths Beach (and park) are both within a 10 minute drive.
